DEBBIE & ABBE DIENSTAG
Guests of Honor
DEENA & GADI LIVSHITS
Young Leadership Awardees
Guests of Honor Debbie and Abbe moved to our community from the Bronx in 1985. They were accompanied by Aryeh, then age 3, and Chaim, then age 1. Sarah and Rivka joined later. At the time, the Shul had just moved into its “new” building (since torn down to make way for the Shul’s most recent expansion) on Spruce Street. A few years later, Abbe started the Shul’s first Shabbat morning hashkama minyan, the forerunner of today’s 8:15 minyan which meets in the Gluck-Gelnick Beit Medrash. Around the same time, he began the Nach shiur that follows the hashkama minyan. That shiur started with Sefer Yehoshua and, over the last twenty odd years with the participation of many others, has run through all of Nevi’im Rishonim, Daniel, Ezra, Nechemia and most of Divrei Hayamim. Abbe also launched the Shul newsletter, coining the name CeLaw, and has served for many years as the Chair of the Shul’s Library Committee. Debbie, meanwhile, is the long-serving Chairperson of the Shul’s Tzedaka Committee and a member of the Shul’s Board of Directors. She also serves on the boards of TOVA, a community mentoring program, and the Davis Memorial Fund, a multi-faceted community chesed organization. The Leon Lief Children’s Fund, a project of the Davis Memorial Fund which sponsors summer camp for needy children and runs a program for divorced mothers, is named after Debbie’s late father.

Abbe is a graduate of the Jerusalem College of Technology, Bar Ilan University and Columbia Law School. He practices corporate law with the firm of Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP in Manhattan. Debbie is a graduate of CUNY and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She has a prominent local practice in pediatric and adolescent medicine. In addition to their children, Debbie and Abbe are the proud grandparents of Tifferet and Moshe, born to Aryeh and their daughter-in-law Penina, and of Leah and Atara, born to Chaim and their daughter-in-law Suri.

Young Leadership Awardees Deena and Gadi have been dedicated and committed to the Young Couples Minyan and to the Young Israel ever since their move to the Five Towns ten years ago. Deena and Gadi have been married for eleven years, and have been blessed with three children. Moshe, who is eight, attends South Shore Yeshiva, and seven year old Alisha and four year old Lorelai, attend HAFTR. Gadi grew up in Forest Hills, and attended Queens College. Deena grew up in Flatbush, attended Brooklyn College and received a Master of Science in Communication Disorders from Adelphi University with a license in Speech Language Pathology. Deena no doubt learned what it means to be committed to a shul from her father who is the gabbai in Rabbi Avigdor Miller's shul. Always willing to lend a helping hand, Gadi volunteers with the Young Couples kiddush, while Deena is a regular participant in Sisterhood events. They also periodically host onegs at their home for the Young Couples Minyan. Besides their involvement in our shul, Deena and Gadi run a small charity called Sasha’s Sunshine Foundation that provides funds for hospitalized children, particularly in the NICU. It is young couples like Deena and Gadi who are providing renewed vitality to our Shul.
